During the second half of 1938 the Fifth Bureau Issue, known as the Prexies, was introduced. On January 20, 1939, the coil stamps of that series premiered with 9 denominations in two formats. This is the story of the 10c value, its production and use.
Featuring the bust of John Tyler, 10th President, the 10c coil is one of the most elusive usages of the entire Prexie series. While 4 billion 10c Prexies were produced, only 22 million of the coils were in printed in a 20 year period. There are no known errors nor significant varieties for this stamp. In the context of today’s exhibit terminology, this would be considered a one frame exhibit.
